VARNA: Gaylord William "Doug" Peterson, 89, formerly of Varna and LaRose, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Lacon.

Born October 7, 1908, in Benningtown Township, Marshall County, to Axel William and Thyra Fredrika Carlson Peterson, he married Evelyn L. Gustafson on August 23, 1941. She died in 1976. He married Kathryn I. Rolinski in 1985. She died December 9, 1993. One son, William, three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. William (Donna) Wood and Mrs. Emil (Joyce) Meierkord, both of Lacon, and Mrs. Gary (Beth) Parker of Marquette Heights; one stepson, Charles Rolinski of Groveland; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was a partner with Peterson's grocery in Varna in the 1930s and 1940s. He formerly operated the Standard Oil station and the Four Corners tavern in Varna. In 1956, he began ownership of Lacon Bowling Lanes for many years.

He was former secretary of the Illinois Horseshoe Association and won the state horseshoe championship in 1928 and 1934. In 1935, he held the world's record by having 20 consecutive double ringers. He competed in nine world horseshoe championships from 1928 to 1950. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Varna, where services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Lane Knouse will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery #2 in rural Varna.
