Funeral services for Carl Russell "Russ" Wenstrand, 86, of Wakefield were held Saturday morning at the Evangelical Covenant Church with the Rev.Ross Erickson officiating. Russ was born on the Fourth of July, 1909 at Wakefield, the son of Alfred and Anna Johnson Wenstrand. He attended the rural school known as Logan Valley and graduated from Wakefield High School. He took ag classes at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Russ and Irene Tell were married on June 18, 1939 at Red Oak, Iowa. The couple lived on the family farm until 1963 when they moved into Wakefield. Russ continued to work on the farm until 1985. His wife passed away in March of 1981. He moved to the Wakefield Health Care Center in December of 1994 where he passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1995. He was a life long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and served the congregation as a trustee and also served on the rural school board. He was active at the Wakefield Senior Center and was a member of the center's pool team. Survivors include a daughter, Paula and her husband, Michael Nanos of Omaha; two sons, Alan and wife, Nancy, of Shaumberg, ILL., and Ronald and his wife, Rose, of Wakefield; a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Marie Wenstrand of Longville, Minn.; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Russ was also preceded in death by an infant sister and a grandson, Eugene Wenstrand. For the services Kelly Brown sang "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". The congregation' sang "Day By Day" with Lois Borg serving as organist. Pallbearers were Keith Wenstrand, Peter Wenstrand, Phillip Wenstrand, Timothy Nanos, Elvis Olson and Myron Olson. Interment was in the Wakefield Cemetery under the direction of the Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home.
