Mary was the third of seven children born to Morgan and Gertrude Erhart McCurdy.
She graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1943.
During the War, she worked summers at Goodyear Rubber Company making B-29 gas tanks and was an active volunteer with the USO in Lincoln.
After graduating with an Associate Degree from the University of Nebraska in 1945, she processed claims at the Veteran's Administration in Lincoln and Chicago.
She returned to UNL and graduated with a B.A. in Journalism in 1949.
There she met Wayne Johnson, a WWII Veteran and fellow journalism student. They were married in 1950 and soon moved to Omaha, where Wayne took a job at the Omaha World Herald, where he would work until his retirement.
In addition to being primary care giver for their five children, Mary filled volunteer roles in her children's schools, the March of Dimes, Campfire Girls the Cub Scouts, the Great Books Foundation, Volunteers Intervening for Equity and St. Leo Catholic Church.
As her children grew, she returned to work in the humanities resource room at Omaha Northwest High School. Mary was a long time member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and regular participant in its International Relations and Book Groups. She was also an avid genealogist and bridge player.
