MONTGOMERY, VEDA ALICE—Veda Alice Montgomery, daughter of William and Mary Griffith Atkinson, was born in Cheyenne county, Kansas, April 2, 1890. She passed away in Kimball, Neb., May 1, 1968, at the age of 78 years, 29 days. She grew up in the Bertrand, Neb. community and graduated from Bertrand high school. September 4, 1907, she was married to Charles E. Montgomery at Pilger, Neb. To this union two children were born, Elvin R. and Lola Ruth. The family moved to Belden, Neb., in 1913 when Mr. Montgomery purchased the Belden progress. They published the Progress until the spring of 1938, when illness forced Mr. Montgomery to retire. While in Belden, Mrs. Montgomery was active in community affairs. She served as choir director and communion stewardess of the Methodist church 25 years. She also gave piano and voice lessons. After their retirement from the newspaper business, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery moved to Geneva, where their son and family resided. Following her husband’s death in May, 1939, Mrs. Montgomery was employed as bookkeeper in Hutchinson, Kas. Randolph and Lincoln, Neb., and in Los Angeles Cal., where she lived several years. She moved to Wayne, Neb., in 1949, and was bookkeeper for the Wayne Creamery until approaching blindness caused her retirement in 1951. She then moved to Fort Collins, Col., to make her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert D. Johnson. She later moved with them to Kimball, where she lived until 1963 when she went to Holdrege to make her home at Methodist Memorial Home. In March, 1968, she returned to Kimball to live in Kimball Manor, which was her home at the time of her death. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church, also being a charter member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, a 40-year member of the Rebekah Lodge in Nebraska, president of the Handicap club of Fort Collins, Col. And an active member of the golden Future club in Kimball. Survivors include one son, E. R. Montgomery of Morrill; a daughter, Mrs. Albert D. (Lola Ruth) Johnson of Anaheim, Cal.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Ronald (Elveda Montgomery) Elznic of Geneva and Mrs. Tom (Nancy Montgomery) Baker of Alhambra, Cal., and six great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. E. R. (Faye) Montgomery, and her son-in-law, Albert D. Johnson. Preceding her in death, besides her husband, was her only grandson, Charles Elvin Montgomery. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 4, at the Allen funeral home in Kimball at 10 a. m., with Rev. K. Orland Lee of the First United Methodist church of Geneva officiating.
