Dorothy Gunkelman Gustafson, 84, formerly of Fargo, ND and Detroit Lakes, MN, died on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010, at her home in Naples, Florida. She was the seventh of nine children born to the late R. F. Gunkelman and Ada (Lockhart) Gunkelman of Fargo.
Dorothy Ann Gunkelman was born in Fargo, ND on August 21st, 1926. Dorothy attended high school at Fargo Central High School in Fargo, ND and also at Stephens High School where she graduated in 1944. After graduation she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where she received an Associate Arts Degree.
Dorothy worked for her father R.F. Gunkelman at the R.F. Gunkelman and Sons seed and grain business in Fargo as a secretary and bookkeeper between school vacations. From 1969 until 1972, she owned and operated a women's boutique called The Creamery in Deephaven, MN. She was an excellent organizer, a very creative, tasteful woman and a very hard worker. She also actively managed a large farming operation for many years in the Red River Valley along with her late husband in the 1950's and 60's.
Dorothy married Wayne F. Gustafson on June 18th, 1947 in the First Baptist Church of Fargo after Wayne finished his World War II military service. Wayne was the son of Ben F. Gustafson and Marie (Kleer) Gustafson. They made their first home in Fargo, ND where Wayne was in the seed treatment business with his father (Ben F. Gustafson) and uncle (Chester Gustafson) in the Ben Gustafson & Son Manufacturing Company of Moorhead (see photo below). Chester Gustafson lived in Fargo, ND and worked for the seed treatment company as a purchasing agent. Wayne's father started developing treatments for small grains to control seed borne diseases like smut. In late 1932, they moved to Fargo and changed the name to the Ben Gustafson Seed Grain Machinery Company. By 1945, Ben F. Gustafson had a machinery shop at 401 Front Street in Fargo, N.D. He lived at 301 10th Avenue South, Fargo, ND. Ben Gustafson & Son Manufacturing Company moved to Moorhead, MN in 1947-1948, where they manufactured machinery used for treating seeds. After Ben Gustafson passed away the company was renamed Gustafson, Inc. In 1957, Gustafson, Inc. moved to St. Louis Park, MN and in 1962 moved to Hopkins, MN. Ben Gustafson & Son Manufacturing Company was renamed later to Gustafson, Inc. Ben F. Gustafson was born in 1888 and passed away on January 18th, 1954 at the age of 65 after being a resident of the Fargo-Moorhead area for 18 years, and leaving behind his family, his wife, only son Wayne, and brother Chester.
Dorothy actively served as Vice President and on the Board of Directors of Gustafson, Inc. until the company was sold in 1982 to the Uniroyal Chemical Company (a division of the Uniroyal Corporation). Gustafson, Inc. was an international seed treatment and chemical company her late husband (Wayne F. Gustafson) founded and owned for many years. Today, the corporation established by Wayne and Dorothy is North America's largest researcher, manufacturer, and marketer of seed treatment products and related equipment. In 1998, Bayer CropScience acquired fifty percent of Gustafson, Inc., and by 2004 Bayer CropScience acquired 100% of Gustafson, Inc.
Dorothy was actively involved in all activities involving the Arts wherever she lived around the country and served on various golf committees at various country clubs where she was a member of. She was also a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Arbor Foundation, The Living Desert (Palm Desert, CA), Vintage Club (Palm Springs, CA), and a past member of the Junior League. She was a member of the NDSU Development Foundation where she served as an Honorary Member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
Dorothy enjoyed the Arts, golfing, traveling, entertaining friends, gardening, raising golden retrievers, bird watching, and reading bird watching books.
During more than 50 years of marriage, Dorothy excelled at creating homes that were warm and welcoming to both family and guests wherever she and Wayne lived including: Fargo, ND; Detroit Lakes, MN; Minneapolis, MN; Scottsdale, AZ: Dallas, TX; Naples, FL; Palm Springs, CA; The Vintage Club, Indian Wells, CA; Belleair, FL; Bonita Beach, FL; Key West, Florida; Edina, MN; and Hawaii. However, Dorothy's true retirement home remained her "Golden Pond" on Pelican Lake near Detroit Lakes, MN.
Dorothy had no children but she was survived by her brothers R.F. (Tod) Gunkelman, Jr. of Fargo, ND and Sun City AZ and R. Thomas Gunkelman, Minneapolis, MN as well as numerous Gunkelman nieces and nephews.
